The High Commission of Ghana in South Africa has announced a temporary suspension of registration for its voluntary repatriation exercise, effective June 2, 2026.

The decision stems from an overwhelming response to the program, which has left officials scrambling to process a massive backlog of applications.

According to diplomatic officials, the pause is necessary to allow the High Commission, in coordination with South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, to meticulously screen and verify the influx of applicants.

“The temporary suspension is to enable the High Commission and Home Affairs process and screen the large number of applications already received,” the High Commission stated in an official communique.

“To date, over 1,500 Ghanaians have registered, and the verification and processing of these applications is currently underway.”

The initiative, aimed at assisting Ghanaian nationals residing in South Africa who wish to return home, has seen rapid take-up since its launch.

“The repatriation exercise has not yet ended,” the High Commission emphasized, adding that a date for the next phase of registrations will be communicated to the public in due course.

The embassy extended its appreciation to the Ghanaian community in South Africa for its cooperation, patience, and understanding as officials work to ensure a seamless and well-coordinated evacuation process.
