NPP Bono Regional Chair critiques court’s remand decision

aBRONYE

The controversial Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, has expressed astonishment at an Accra Circuit Court judge’s assertion that he would reoffend if released on bail.

This judicial conclusion led to his temporary remand in police custody before his legal team could intervene.

Mr Abronye maintained that he was entirely unaware of any evidence that could have led the judge to such a deduction at the time.

While acknowledging that the granting or refusal of bail remains at the court’s discretion, Mr Abronye emphasised that such powers must be exercised in line with established legal principles. He found the court’s insistence on detention rather than bail highly surprising.

Accompanied by his legal counsel, Mr Abronye recently attended the Accra High Court to request an alteration to his bail conditions, a matter which has now been deferred until tomorrow.

Mr Abronye further noted that the presiding Circuit Court judge was fully briefed on his ongoing health complications. Upon returning from a medical assessment overseas, he had personally updated the magistrate to ensure his availability for the proceedings involving himself and the Inspector General of Police.

Despite the court being completely aware of his medical circumstances, Mr Abronye suggested that external factors might have compromised the judge’s objectivity, labelling the verdict as one of the most flawed rulings in the history of the Ghanaian judiciary.
