NPP Minority has Lost credibility over LGBTQ+ Bill, claims political analyst Dr Asante Okyere

The current NPP minority in Parliament has lost both its relevance and credibility with the Ghanaian public, according to a leading political analyst.

Dr Jonathan Asante Okyere, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and Executive Director of the African Institute of Strategic Services, delivered a scathing assessment of the minority MPs following recent parliamentary friction.

His remarks were prompted by accusations from the minority benches that the NDC majority had effectively ambushed Parliament to pass an LGBTQ+ bill.

The minority claimed that the legislation had been altered to favour rather than restrict LGBTQ+ activities, sparking a fierce debate.

However, speaking on the radio programme Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Dr Asante Okyere challenged this narrative, questioning why the minority failed to pass the bill during their own time in government.

He pointed out that the legislation never even reached Jubilee House before a statement was issued to block Parliament from presenting it to the former president for assent.

Urging the minority to abandon what he characterised as sheer hypocrisy, Dr Asante Okyere argued that MPs should focus their energies on national development instead.

He suggested that the minority’s public rhetoric surrounding the bill served as a direct insult to their own colleagues, who had sat on the parliamentary committee and unanimously recommended the legislation for the floor of the House.

He noted that several high-profile NPP figures served on that committee, arguing that such senior politicians would not have endorsed the bill lightly without proper scrutiny.

Dr Asante Okyere stated that he saw no indication that President John Mahama would decline to assent to the legislation. Instead, he expressed firm confidence that the president would sign the bill into law immediately upon returning from his trip abroad.
