GRNMA welcomes conviction of nurse’s attacker, but believes a jail term would’ve been stronger deterrent

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has commended the court for convicting the man who assaulted a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema.

While the Association noted that it expected the perpetrator to receive a prison sentence, it acknowledged that the court-ordered fine is a step in the right direction.

Philemon Gyapong, the National Public Relations Officer for the Association, stated that a jail term would have sent a much stronger signal to individuals who have developed a habit of assaulting healthcare workers.

The Community 22 District Court convicted and sentenced the assailant, Desmond Bosomtwe, to a fine of 100 penalty units.

The court further ordered the convict to pay GHS 5,000 in compensation to the complainant, Nurse Priscilla Addo.

Additionally, Bosomtwe has been barred from visiting the health facility for the next 12 months, effective from the date of judgment on Tuesday, June 9, and was required to sign a bond of good behavior.

Commenting on the ruling, Mr. Gyapong noted that the judiciary acted timeously, though he expressed a preference for a stricter sentence.

“However, we had wanted Desmond to be incarcerated even for some weeks. It would have served as a deterrent to all those who assault nurses. These cases have happened one too many times because those who engage in them don’t get severe punishments,” he stated.

The assault occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when Senior Staff Midwife Priscilla Addo approached visitors to inform them that official visiting hours had concluded.

In line with hospital protocols to maintain a quiet and healing environment for patients, she requested that they leave the ward.

However, Bosomtwe, who was visiting a patient, refused to comply, triggering a heated verbal exchange that ultimately escalated into a physical assault on the midwife—an incident that was captured on video.
