Two medical staff from the East Gonja District Hospital have been remanded in police custody by a Tamale Circuit Court to aid inquiries into a newborn baby’s sudden disappearance from the hospital.

The accused individuals, Frank Atanga and Mariam Mohammed, faced the court on charges involving abduction and conspiracy to commit theft after the child went missing on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

The presiding judge ordered a one-week detention for the two employees after they gave conflicting explanations regarding how the infant vanished from the Salaga-based institution.

The court appearance follows an intense, unsuccessful search carried out by the hospital’s administration right after the baby was noticed missing.

Once internal search attempts proved futile, the case was handed over to the East Gonja District Police Command for a full criminal probe.

In a formal response to the unfolding event, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, the Savannah Regional Director of Health Service, voiced deep concern over the lapse in security.

“The Savannah Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service regrets to announce an unfortunate incident involving a missing newborn at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga,” Dr. Otoo stated.

He also shared his condolences with the devastated family, stating, “The Service extends its deepest sympathies to the parents and family of the baby during this difficult period and assures them of its full support as investigations continue.”

The Regional Health Directorate is collaborating with local police, hospital leadership, and other key parties to uncover the precise details of the disappearance and find the infant.

Acknowledging growing public anxiety, Dr. Otoo stressed that the protection, safety, and care of patients and infants continue to be the primary focus of the Ghana Health Service.

Both health administrators and law enforcement are making an urgent plea to the community for any details that could help find the missing baby.

Members of the public who possess useful information are requested to reach out to the East Gonja District Hospital, the Savannah Regional Health Directorate, or the closest police station without delay, with authorities promising that all tips will be kept strictly confidential.
