A 39-year-old man has been taken into police custody following the alleged murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a second-year student at the University of Cape Coast.

The suspect, identified as Michael Mensah, was apprehended at the Pedu Lorry Station on Monday evening by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.

Officials confirmed the arrest was the result of a continuous, intelligence-driven operation.

Initial police enquiries reveal that Mr Mensah, who claims to be a teacher but also operates as a driver, took the student from the Ayensu Plaza hostel area on the evening of 11 June.

He then drove her to Hutchland Beach, which is the final location where she was seen alive, and where her body was later discovered.

Prior to her disappearance, the victim told a roommate that she was leaving their quarters in casual attire to meet someone she knew.

Alarm was raised by family and friends when she failed to return home.

The suspect is currently being held by the authorities to aid in their ongoing enquiries, and law enforcement officials have promised to share further developments as the investigation continues.
