Bridge collapse cuts off Upper West Akim communities; Residents threaten election boycott

A heavy downpour has washed away the main road bridge at Kwabaa, completely cutting off residents and drivers traveling between Kwabaa and Nyanowa in the Upper West Akim District.

The structural failure has halted local transit, preventing a majority of the Kwabaa-based students who attend the Kwabaa-Nyanowa Community Day Senior High School from reaching their classes.

The disruption has caused severe panic among local parents, as students are currently in the middle of writing their final WASSCE examinations.

The collapsed bridge has brought vehicular traffic to a complete standstill, blocking drivers from Agona Swedru from reaching Asamankese, and stopping commuters from Asamankese from accessing Nyanowa.

Even motorcyclists are unable to navigate the damaged crossing.

The Assemblyman for the area, Hon. Yasimo, who also serves as the District Assembly Presiding Member, stated that emergency reconstruction measures are being organized.

He noted that the Member of Parliament, the District Chief Executive, and the Regional Minister are currently collaborating to establish an alternative bypass route for passengers and drivers while plans for a permanent new bridge are finalised.

Despite these promises, frustrated community members are demanding immediate state intervention. Residents have issued a direct appeal to the government to restore access before the situation worsens.

Local leadership issued a warning, stating that if the government fails to rehabilitate the deteriorating road stretch from Mepom Junction through Nyanowa to Abam, the community will ban all ballot boxes and refuse to participate in the upcoming elections.
