A legal representative for the Kristo Asafo Church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, has claimed that former Dome Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo initiated gunfire during a disturbance at a church gathering meant to present their new leader.

Narrating the incident, Kantanka noted that the meeting was intended to present the newly designated head of the church to its General Council.

Addressing the chaotic scene and reports of shots fired, the lawyer alleged that Adwoa Safo drove up to the location and tried to ram her way inside.

He noted that bystanders first noticed loud crashing noises, which turned out to be her car hitting the southern entrance.

“We realised that it was Honorable Sarah Adwoa Safo who was in the car. Since she couldn’t penetrate the gate through with the car, she moved to the northern gate and repeated the same action,” he told Joy News.

Kantanka further mentioned that the private security guards grew alarmed that her actions posed a threat to the large crowd gathered inside the compound.

“The information I got was that she fired the first shot and then banged the gate with her car. The private security also knew that the lives of people were at risk, so they were giving warning shots,” he said.

“As to whether she was wounded, I can’t confirm that,” he added.

He dismissed claims that the former lawmaker was banned from attending, maintaining that she would have been granted entry if she had followed standard protocols.

“No one prevented her from entering. If she had parked and indicated she wanted to enter, that would have been all,” he said.

The altercation is now being looked into by both national police and church leadership to determine exactly what happened.

“We [Church] will also conduct our private investigation, and anybody who has perpetrated any wrongdoing will be prosecuted,” Nana Kofi Kantanka stated.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested six persons in connection with the incident.
