A devastating series of road traffic accidents across the Volta Region on Sunday left six people dead and 34 others injured, triggering a rapid emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The carnage began just before 1:00 PM along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road. Emergency crews from the Peki Fire Station, led by Station Officer II Richard Amenyogbeli, arrived within ten minutes of a distress call to find two simultaneous crash sites.

The most severe of the two involved a Metro Mass Transit bus traveling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board. Firefighters faced a grueling extrication process to free those trapped inside the wreckage. While crews successfully rescued 24 passengers, four people—one male and three females—died at the scene.

“Our crews deployed every available resource immediately upon arrival to manage both locations simultaneously,” a GNFS spokesperson stated. “The rescued victims were quickly evacuated to the Peki Government Hospital, while the deceased were handed over to the police.”

The second vehicle collision along that same stretch involved a MAN Diesel truck en route to Tamale and a Toyota Camry heading toward Accra.

Fortunately, all five occupants had been pulled from the partially damaged vehicles before the rescue team’s arrival.

Minutes after the Peki dispatch, a separate disaster struck the Ho Civic Centre. Rescuers from the Ho Regional Headquarters, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Seth Sarfo, arrived at the scene within two minutes of a 1:04 PM distress call.

The multi-vehicle collision involved a Hyundai Mighty truck, a Pragya tricycle, and an unregistered motorbike.

Ten victims were pulled from the Ho crash and rushed to the Ho Municipal Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital. However, medical authorities later confirmed that two of the injured men succumbed to their wounds.

As police launch a full investigation into the causes of the separate crashes, the GNFS has issued an urgent appeal to the motoring public.

“We are urging all motorists to strictly adhere to road safety regulations,” the Volta Region Public Relations Officer emphasized in a statement. “Drivers must avoid excessive speeding, exercise maximum caution on the highways, and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to help prevent these tragic, avoidable crashes.”
