Mahama will appoint Defence Minister at the right time – NDC

June 25, 2026
Gibrill

Mahdi Gibril, the Director of Elections for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged Ghanaians not to fear perceived delays in the appointment of a new Defence Minister following the passing of Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

He asserted that President John Dramani Mahama will appoint a Defence Minister at the appropriate time. In the interim, he indicated that Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi has performed exceptionally well in his capacity.

According to Gibril, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is merely creating needless concern and panic. Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he noted that government operations have not ground to a halt, even without a substantive Minister in place.

He added that the government remains committed to delivering on its promises, particularly with the economy now in a stable condition.

He further argued that running a ministry is a collective effort between the Minister and their Deputy, meaning the Deputy can smoothly function in the Minister’s absence.

“President Mahama will appoint the Defence Minister at the right time. In fact, when you look at a Ministry, both the Minister and the Deputy are the Ministers. The Deputy is working so well. Therefore, I encourage Ghanaians to rest assured that President Mahama will appoint someone at the appropriate time. This agenda is being pushed by the NPP. They are even raising concerns that we have not appointed the 60 ministers we promised, and you have to wonder what their trouble is.”

“Will we not continue to provide better leadership whether a Defence Minister is appointed or not? Are we saying the Deputy Minister is not performing? Should he not be allowed to work?”
