Works Minister links national flooding to indiscriminate waste disposal

June 29, 2026
Kenneth

The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has called on citizens to take personal responsibility for mitigating nationwide flooding.

Speaking at a press conference on the issue, the Minister identified indiscriminate waste disposal as a primary driver of flood events during heavy downpours.

He noted that while the government continues to invest in drainage infrastructure and flood mitigation initiatives, civic cooperation is essential.

“The way we throw rubbish outside and also in gutters when raining. All those things are not good. The same people will turn around and blame the government for not doing anything about it,” Hon. Adjei said. “As a citizen you have to also help to reduce flooding,” he urged.

Addressing separate accommodation challenges, the Minister highlighted that inadequate rural housing frequently deters teachers and nurses from accepting remote placements.

To resolve this, the government has commenced the construction of residential facilities in select districts, with plans to secure additional funding for broader expansion.

“They are trying to get some funds to expand to other districts so when they post teachers or nurses they can get nice accommodation,” he stated.
