$350M cocaine haul destroyed following court order, Interior Minister confirms

July 7, 2026
MUNTAKA MUBARAK

Appearing before Parliament’s Public Assurance Committee, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed the destruction of a massive cocaine haul valued at over $350 million.

The contraband was intercepted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in March 2025 at Cape Coast’s Pedu Junction, where it had been concealed inside a sand-laden tipper truck.

To verify the disposal, the Minister presented the committee with a flash drive containing video evidence of the operation alongside the judicial mandate that sanctioned it.

“The pen drive that was added to the committee shows all the evidence. It shows the video of the destruction because we cannot destroy any drugs without a court order, which we secured and have provided,” he said.
Regarding the legal proceedings, Mr. Mubarak explained that the judicial process faced minor delays due to severe weather.

“The substantive case is one that has been prosecuted. The last adjourned date was 30th of April, and they were to reappear on 29th of June. Unfortunately, 29th June was the day of the flood, so they are now waiting to get a new court date,” he added.

Three suspects, including the truck driver and a domestic worker, have been arrested and subsequently granted bail. As security agencies work to dismantle the trafficking network, authorities are collaborating with international bodies like Interpol and deploying border watchlists to apprehend remaining suspects both locally and abroad. Mr. Mubarak committed to updating Parliament as the prosecution unfolds.
