Speaker suspends Friday sitting for MPs to join nationwide cleanup exercise

July 7, 2026
Bagbin-Speaker-of-Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has suspended the House’s sitting on Friday, 10 July 2026, enabling Members of Parliament from flood-hit constituencies to join the National General Cleaning Exercise.

This decision follows the government’s declaration of Friday, 10 July, and Saturday, 11 July 2026, as National General Cleaning Days across seven regions affected by recent floods.

The initiative aims to clear blocked drains and waterways to reduce the risk of further flooding.

In a parliamentary statement, Speaker Bagbin noted that the decision followed consultations with House leadership regarding parliament’s role in supporting the national cleanup.

He explained that MPs from the affected areas need to be present in their communities to lead and coordinate activities with residents.

“Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, 10th July 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes,” he said.

The Speaker added that further details regarding parliamentary business would be shared with MPs in due course.

The National General Cleaning Exercise will focus on flood-prone areas, with residents, local authorities, and other stakeholders participating to clear drainage systems and improve sanitation.
