The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has appointed prominent Ghanaian entrepreneur and business leader Mr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong as its first Chancellor, effective August 1, 2026.
The appointment was officially approved by the University Governing Council during its meeting on May 26, 2026, in accordance with the UniMAC Statutes.
As the ceremonial head, Mr. Ofori Sarpong will champion the university’s strategic vision, confer degrees, and strengthen ties between academia and the corporate sector.
Mr. Ofori Sarpong, a Chartered Accountant by profession, is the Founder and CEO of the Special Group of Companies. He also holds significant co-ownership stakes in prominent Ghanaian enterprises, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited, and U2 Salt Limited.
In an official statement, the university community expressed strong confidence in his upcoming tenure:
“The University Governing Council, Management, and the entire University community warmly congratulate Mr Ernest Ofori Sarpong on his appointment.
They are confident that under his distinguished stewardship as Chancellor, UniMAC will continue to deepen its engagement with industry, expand strategic partnerships, enhance its national and international profile, and consolidate its position as the leading university for media, arts, communication, and related disciplines.”
Beyond his corporate footprint, Mr. Ofori Sarpong brings extensive leadership experience from public and educational advisory boards. He currently serves as the Board Chairman of the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana.
UniMAC, established by an Act of Parliament in 2020 through the merger of GIJ, GIL, and NAFTI, noted that this appointment represents a significant milestone in its history.
