Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is scheduled to hold a press briefing today, Monday, 7th September 2026, to present a comprehensive account of the recent evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic violence.

The government officially concluded the evacuation exercise on Friday, 4th September 2026, with the safe arrival of the final batch of 41 evacuees. In total, approximately 1,900 Ghanaians were successfully brought back home under the state-sponsored initiative.

To support their return, the government provided the evacuees with financial reintegration assistance, transportation allowances, comprehensive medical care, psychosocial support, free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration, and ongoing employment assistance.

While welcoming the final group of returnees, Mr Ablakwa explained that the decision to facilitate the evacuation was taken after a thorough assessment of the situation and direct interaction with affected citizens during his official visit to South Africa. He noted that the visit allowed him to gauge the gravity of the developments on the ground and take decisive action.

The Minister acknowledged the operational challenges involved in the exercise but stressed that the government considered the safety and welfare of its citizens paramount. He commended President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to protecting Ghanaian nationals living abroad.

According to the Ministry, the successful operation demonstrates the high premium the government places on the lives of its citizens worldwide, reinforcing the message that no Ghanaian will be left stranded in times of crisis.

The Ministry also expressed deep condolences to the families of the four Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives during the unrest, offering prayers for strength and comfort for the bereaved families.
