Nigerien community backs Ghana’s drive to clear street beggars

Community leaders in the Ashanti Region have voiced strong support for ongoing state operations aimed at clearing street beggars from key thoroughfares in Kumasi and Accra.

The sweep, which targets vagrants including mothers and vulnerable infants, addresses growing public concerns over street begging being exploited as an alternative occupation.

Reacting to the exercise, the Ashanti Regional Chief of the Nigerien Community, Mohammad Abubakar Sadiq, refuted widespread assumptions that every street beggar hails from Niger, cautioning against broad generalizations that tarnish the entire expatriate populace.

He emphasized that the Nigerien government maintains a firm stance against mendicancy, noting that such public solicitation directly contradicts the core values of their nation.

Chief Sadiq urged Ghanaian authorities to enforce municipal laws strictly and hold offenders accountable regardless of origin, while also expressing worry over young people using social media to abuse traditional elders—a trend he warned could provoke tribal friction if left unchecked.
