Two of Ghana’s foremost film production powerhouses, Sparrow Studios and OldFilm Productions, have joined forces to launch ‘The 70 Slate’, a ambitious cinematic initiative designed to commemorate Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary and reignite the nation’s cinema culture.
The joint venture will oversee the production and release of three major feature films, namely Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green, a modern remake of the classic I Told You So, and The Return of Makunse.
Together, the three projects aim to capture pivotal moments in time while offering a reflective portrayal of Ghanaian society, culture, and identity on the big screen.
Beyond celebrating the country’s cultural heritage, the initiative seeks to inspire national pride, unity, and self-reflection, while re-energising cinema attendance across all regions of Ghana.
The project also aims to drive diaspora engagement, boost tourism, and position Ghana as a creative leader in Africa’s evolving film industry.
To ensure maximum reach both locally and internationally, each film will undergo a comprehensive multi-stage rollout.
This includes special advance cinema screenings, grand premieres for invited guests, and a full theatrical run.
The releases will be followed by nationwide regional tours, community screenings across schools, churches, and public spaces, alongside corporate, institutional, and diaspora showcases, culminating in online premieres for global audiences.
The Return of Makunse will be premiered on December 4, 2026, while Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green is slated for cinemas in July 2027, with the remake of I Told You So set to premiere on December 3, 2027.
