Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has highlighted the importance of tailored interventions, research-backed policies, and grounded leadership in transforming rural communities across Ghana.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 Global South Academic Forum held in Shanghai, China, the Vice President engaged in bilateral discussions with the forum’s organising committee, led by Chair Professor Lu Xinyu. Their dialogue focused on China’s strategic achievements in rural revitalisation, poverty alleviation, and sustainable community advancement.
Professor Lu detailed how targeted structural interventions successfully reshaped previously deprived areas across China. Key drivers of this transformation included local governance reforms, the revitalisation of fisheries and aquaculture sectors, grassroots sporting initiatives, and the modern infrastructure expansion necessary to unlock economic potential.
Reflecting on these insights, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang underscored the necessity of tailoring development frameworks to the unique needs of individual communities rather than applying uniform, blanket strategies.
She noted that effective public policy must rely heavily on empirical research and deliberate government execution, reinforcing the concept that every local area possesses intrinsic knowledge, resources, and latent opportunities waiting to be harnessed.
Expressing her appreciation to Professor Lu for sharing China’s developmental journey, the Vice President emphasized that genuine national progress relies on leaders remaining closely linked to the populations they serve to ensure public initiatives directly address local realities.
She reaffirmed that the core strength of South-South cooperation rests in exchanging proven strategies, adapting foreign success stories to suit domestic conditions, and deploying sustainable solutions aimed at improving the living standards of Ghanaian citizens.
