Ghana’s national airline is set to take to the skies once again in 2027, almost thirty years after operations came to a halt, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed.
Addressing members of the Ghanaian diaspora in Ottawa, Canada, over the weekend, the Minister outlined government’s plans to restore the historic carrier.
According to Mr Ablakwa, President John Dramani Mahama remains deeply committed to resurrecting the state airline—describing it as “the pride of Ghana, the wings of Ghana” that brought immense national pride until its collapse in the early 2000s.
A technical committee established by President Mahama to spearhead the revival effort has already presented its final report. The President subsequently convened a meeting with the committee’s executive team last month to examine the strategic roadmap.
“I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target is that next year, 2027, we should have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” Mr Ablakwa assured the applauding crowd.
The Minister further explained that specific flight paths have already been earmarked for the revamped airline, highlighting a non-stop link between Ghana and Canada as a top priority.
“The Ghana-Canada route, which will be the first direct flight, will be prioritized,” he noted.
Mr Ablakwa stressed that the initiative underscores the administration’s determination to support Ghanaians living abroad while enhancing bilateral and commercial ties between Ghana and Canada.
