The Ghana Prisons Service has launched an investigation into an alleged plot by some inmates to end the life of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the Service, it received the information through a senior aide to the politician, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who stated that Chairman Wontumi personally alerted him to the life-threatening plot during a court appearance on Tuesday.
Dr Boakye-Danquah claimed the plot was uncovered after reports emerged that some prison inmates attempted to poison Wontumi while he was in custody.
The revelation comes as the NPP powerhouse marks his 100th day behind bars.
Commenting on the matter, the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Prisons Service, Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Abdul Latif Adamu, confirmed that the issue is being investigated.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he noted that although the Service feels disappointed in how the communication regarding the issue was handled by the aide, a full probe is under way.
“We have heard of the incident. We also got wind of the issue from the Special Aide to Wontumi. Unfortunately, we did not hear it from Wontumi himself. However, we have launched an investigation into the matter. We want to establish the truth and ensure that, should it be true, we will deal with the matter.”
When asked whether it was true that the Service had made staff or inmate transfers in connection with the allegation, he responded:
“I cannot confirm that to you at the moment.”
CSP Abdul Latif Adamu assured the public regarding the current condition of Chairman Wontumi, stating that he remains healthy, safe, and in good spirits. He added that the politician has not experienced any difficulties while in custody.
“I can state categorically that Wontumi is healthy and doing well. He has not been maltreated by anyone. It is for this reason that we were shocked by this news. The relationship between the inmates and officers is cordial. We also have systems in place allowing inmates to report any challenges. But we cannot ignore these claims either. That is why we are investigating to determine the truth.”
