The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has convened a major national conference of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives in Kumasi as part of stepped-up efforts to reinforce local government participation in combating illegal small-scale mining across the country.
The high-level engagement, organized under the theme “Combating Illegal Mining in Ghana: The Role of Local Governments,” brought together key actors including Regional Ministers, local council heads, traditional leaders, security agency chiefs, and relevant sector stakeholders.
Deliberations centered on shaping actionable strategies, enhancing administrative accountability, and establishing a unified framework to dismantle illegal mining operations, locally known as galamsey. Participants examined current enforcement gaps and explored mechanisms to tighten oversight within individual districts.
The conference underscored the indispensable mandate held by local government authorities and traditional leaders in safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.
Stakeholders resolved to enhance grassroots coordination to ensure environmental protection and foster sustainable community development moving forward.
