Commercial transport operators across the country have officially called off their planned sit-down strike following a high-level meeting with government representatives.

The strike, which was initially announced in a statement on November 2, 2026, was intended as a protest against the failure of authorities to clear trading activities from major roadways. However, following discussions on Tuesday, November 3, between transport leaders and government officials, the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) resolved to suspend the industrial action.

The meeting brought together key sector ministers, including the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Transport, and the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs. During the deliberations, government representatives committed to resolving the grievances raised by the transport unions.

In a joint press release issued by the leadership, the operators highlighted the assurances provided by the ministers regarding street hawking and road safety infrastructure.

“The Ministers assured us of their firm commitments to address our concerns, including the trading activities on road corridors, adequate signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators. A committee has been formed to identify hotspots and recommend the way forward,” the leadership stated.

Expressing gratitude for the swift intervention, the transport unions extended an apology to the traveling public for any anxiety caused by the initial strike announcement.

“We thank the Ministers for their prompt engagement and apologise unreservedly to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the planned sit-down strike would have caused,” the statement added.

Despite the suspension, the unions emphasized that the call-off is conditional, issuing a 30-day ultimatum for the agreed measures to be implemented.

“It is our expectation that all our concerns raised during the meeting will be addressed within 30 days, failure of which we would have no option than to embark on the sit-down strike,” the leadership warned.

The joint statement was signed by Mr Godfred Abulbire, General Secretary of the GPRTU of TUC, Ghana, and Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, General Secretary of the GRTCC, on behalf of road transport operators nationwide. Commuters are advised to proceed with their regular daily routines as commercial transport services remain fully operational.
