Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago are gearing up to deepen their bilateral ties, with a strong focus on securing new investments and expanding joint initiatives across the oil and gas sector.
The move follows high-level bilateral discussions between Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and his Trinidadian counterpart, His Excellency Sean S.M. Sobers (MP), on the sidelines of the recently concluded Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
The diplomatic engagement provided an opportunity for both nations to review existing relations and lay out a strategic roadmap for enhanced economic cooperation. Speaking after his return to Accra, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa described the discussions as highly positive, emphasizing that both countries remain committed to translating their historical friendship into tangible economic benefits.
A major milestone in the strengthening relationship will take place next year, when Ghana officially commissions its new High Commission in Trinidad. His Excellency William Anani Abotsi has been appointed to serve as Ghana’s first High Commissioner to the Caribbean nation, a move expected to streamline diplomatic channels, bolster trade, and facilitate bilateral investment.
Beyond bilateral commercial interests, the discussions also touched on broader global affairs and shared international priorities. Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago agreed to align their efforts on key global issues, particularly in advancing Africa’s representation and advocating for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations system.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to pushing for a reconfiguration of the global financial architecture, advocating for climate justice, protecting national resource sovereignty, driving AI regulation, and promoting reparatory justice and peaceful conflict resolution on the world stage.
