Invasion of Military in Parl was terrible & dangerous-Lawyer

A private legal practitioner lawyer Ebenezer Ahiator has condemned the invasion of the military in the Chamber of Parliament when elected MPs were in the process of electing a Speaker.

Armed soldiers Thursday stormed the Chamber of Parliament following the chaos in the House.

The men arrived in the House together with armed policemen ostensibly to restore calm in the Chamber.

The NDC’s side, however, demanded the military to move out because it was improper for them to be there.

The armed men with some having facemasks came to the floor of Parliament at about 3.30 a.m. reportedly on the orders of the former Minister of Defence, Mr. Dominic Nitiwul.

Reacting to this, the lawyer said the presence of the military is the worst thing to have happened to Ghana.

He also described the Clerk of the House as someone who was not assertive and unprepared.

According to him, he allowed both sides to bully him during the proceedings.

Lawyer Ahiator said if the Clerk was firm, the chaos would have been prevented.

”The scenes in parliament were unfortunate. We could have gone through the process peacefully. But for the fact that soldiers came to parliament was the worst thing to happen to Ghana. It was terrible. If for anything at all, we have police personnel present.”

He said our leaders are gradually painting a picture for the military to intervene in everything we do as a people even if that does not form part of their mandate.

This he warned could spell doom for the country, adding, ”we have to be careful. It was improper for the soldiers to come to parliament.”

Meanwhile, the lawyer has advised the MPs from both sides to work together because the current situation in the House demands that they build consensus.

Anything part from consensus-building will gravely affect Ghana in the long run, he added.

He made the remarks on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.
