The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has opined sarcastically that President Akufo-Addo would have to appoint a Minister of Awareness to be responsible for stimulating awareness in his government.
His opinion follows some responses from some nominees who appeared before the vetting committee to be vetted.
On the issue of the contract awarded for the $150 testing at the Airport for travellers, Health Minister-designate Kwaku Agyemang-Manu was the first to deny knowledge of the contract.
Then came the Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey who also denied knowledge.
The Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection, lawyer Sarah Adwoa Safo, the immediate-past Procurement Minister also denied knowledge of the deal.
Mr. Ablakwa who is not happy about these responses noted that Ghana’s democracy will not function effectively with the mantra of the ”I am not aware”.
He said this will not ensure accountability and transparency.
”At this rate, President Akufo-Addo may have to appoint a Minister for Awareness to be responsible for stimulating awareness in his government.
The mantra: “I am not aware” cannot be countenanced in any functioning democracy where transparency & accountability must be sacrosanct.
It appears to me that Parliament will have to devise new strategies within the parameters of our Standing Orders to immediately defeat this creeping convenient excuse of lack of awareness,” he added.
