May 28, 2021

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has announced its plans to plant one million trees in June this year.

The initiative forms part of efforts to support the Green Ghana Programme by the government of Ghana, which was launched recently by the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante announced this at the thanksgiving service of the Central Presbytery Young Adults’ Fellowship (YAF) Conference at Brakwa in the Central Region on Sunday.

According to the Moderator, the tree planting exercise, which forms part of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Environmental and Sanitation Witness, is to augment the government’s efforts to green Ghana and bring back the lost forest reserves.

Rt. Rev Prof. Mante said the exercise will take place on June 11, 2021, across the country, where it is expected that every Presbyterian both young and old, would plant at least three trees that day.

He urged all Presbytery Chairpersons, District Ministers and Ministers in Charge of the various Congregations to ensure that the exercise takes place successfully.

Rt. Rev Prof. Mante said the tree planting exercise would create awareness about the need to protect our forest in Ghana and educate Ghanaians on the environment and the effects of deforestation.

The Moderator said Ghana like a lot of sub-Saharan Africa, is experiencing the effects of climate change with irregular seasons and forest areas gradually turning into Savannah and desert grassland.

He added that already this had had a huge impact on the variety and population of various species across a once-thriving rainforest zone.
The Moderator paid a four-day Pastoral working visit to the Central Presbytery of the Church to acquaint himself with the life of the Church in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He commended Agents of the Church in the Presbytery for working tirelessly to keep the Church united and intact in the face of COVID-19.
He said the outbreak of COVID-19 had created lots of challenges for the Church therefore some activities which were planned to be executed during the year would delay but will not be derailed.

He was accompanied by the Presbytery Chairperson, Rev Alex Owusu-Addo, and the Lay Representative on the General Assembly Council of the Church, Ms. Stella Amofa Dodoo and the Public Relations Officer of the Church Rev George Larbi.
