Hospitals in Africa could be at a breaking point due to increasing cases of Covid-19-WHO

July 21, 2021

She warned hospitals could be at a breaking point as Covid-19 cases and deaths increase across Africa.

She explained that as the surge sweeps across Africa, we are witnessing the brutal cost of lives lost.

Deaths she noted have climbed steeply for the past five weeks, jumping from 40% in the past week.

Dr. Moeti said this is a clear warning, our hospitals are at a breaking point.

She opined that under-resourced health systems are facing a dire shortage of health workers, supplies, equipment and infrastructure needed to provide care to severely ill Covid-19 patients.

The number one priority for African countries is boosting oxygen production so we can give critically ill patients a fighting chance.

Effective treatment is the last line of defence against Covid-19, and it must not crumble, she added.

She said this recently in a brief message which was broadcast on the social handles of WHO.
