Accra Sports Stadium was never shutdown & the facility is not only for sporting activities-NSA

December 19, 2021

The Director-General of The National Sports Authority (NSA) Professor Peter Twumesi has refuted media reports that the Accra Sports Stadium was never shut down.

Several media reports have viral stating that the Accra Sports Stadium was not available to host Ghana Premier League (GPL) games for 14 days.

The reported closure of the stadium was to facilitate maintenance works on the playing field.

According to the communique sent to the Ghana Football Association [GFA] by the NSA, works will be carried out from the 13th to 26th December.

“The National Sports Authority would like to inform the Ghana Football Association to postpone or reschedule league matches slated from Monday, 13th to Sunday, 26th December 2021 ostensibly for planned maintenance works at the stadium,” the statement said.

“The Authority deeply regrets the inconveniences this request will bring to the clubs.”

However, the NSA boss says the stadium was never closed but rather, it was the pitch that was under renovation.

He disclosed this on Total Sports Review on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm following concerns raised by Ghanaians that the facility had been rented out for the organization of a private event.

Prof. Twumesi noted that our sports stadiums are not meant for only sporting activities.

He explained that the sports stadiums are also rented out for private events.

He revealed that for events organized off the pitch, the organizers pay Ghc50,000 including the cost for damages of Ghc10,000.

For events that are held on the pitch, be said aside from the Ghc50,000, the event organizers are made to pay an insurance cost of another Ghc50,000.

Professor Twumesi lamented that Ghanaians talk too much and do not investigate issues to discover the full details before making allegations against people in charge.
