The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has hinted that they are likely to increase transport fares by 10% despite the recently announced 15% increment which took effect on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
Deputy General Secretary Mr. Richard Yaw Amankwah who disclosed this said the GPRTU per its communique on the new transport fares agreed with the government to increase transport fares by another 10% should the increment of fuel prices move up by 10%.
He revealed the GPRTU had wanted a 30% increment because, by their analysis, the cost of fuel and other factors to the driver was more than 23%.
“However, the government negotiated and asked that we only increase faces by 15%. The government argued that Ghanaians were already facing some challenges hence the need for us to maintain the increment at 15%”.
He was speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem 87.5Fm.
“We met the government on three occasions and demanded for 30% but the government asked that we increase fares by 15%.
We agreed but also asked that should the prices of a fuel increase by 10% in the process of increasing fares, then we will increase fares by 10% aside from the 15% increment.
