Three people have been killed and 34 suspects arrested following a deadly shooting linked to a protracted chieftaincy dispute in Funsi, within the Wa East District of the Upper West Region.
The violence broke out on the night of 22 May 2026 in the Gbelonosi area, prompting an immediate deployment by the Upper West Regional Police Command to restore order.
Officers initially discovered the bodies of Fufulu Nandug, 37, and Yussif Samahan, 22, before later uncovering a third victim, 20-year-old Amadu Lukman, during subsequent sweeps of the community.

Regional Police Commander Francis Yiribaare led a reinforcement team to the scene to quell escalating tensions between rival factions and oversee the retrieval of weapons and items linked to the unrest, including a shotgun, a bow and arrows, gunpowder, and traditional war smocks.
All 34 suspects and the seized items have been transferred to Wa to assist with ongoing investigations and potential prosecution.

While extending condolences to the victims’ families, the Police Administration has urged residents to remain calm, avoid retaliatory attacks, and cooperate with law enforcement.
Intensified patrols and additional security deployments remain in place to maintain peace in the area.
