Akwasi Addai, the founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has stated categorically that he has not apologised for his comments on the allegation that some traditional rulers in Kumasi are engaged in galamsey.
The politician claimed that what he did was ask the Ashanti Kingdom’s overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, to forgive him for the way he crafted his message.
I’ve made no apologies. I only retracted and said that if the way I spoke or crafted my message offended the chiefs, particularly the Overlord, they should forgive me. Apologizing implies that what he said was not true. I’m not sorry for anything. Some of our chiefs, pastors, and leaders are on their way.
I have not apologised. I only retracted and said that if the way I spoke or crafted my message offended the chiefs, especially the Overlord, they should forgive me. Apologizing implies that what he said was false. I have nothing to apologise for. Some of our chiefs, pastors, and leaders are leading the country down the wrong path. As Ghanaians, we must express our displeasure.
If we do not rise up and save this country, we will soon be forced to import water. You are slowly killing us by destroying our water bodies, and when we complain, you claim to be chiefs, so we should not complain. What exactly do you mean?
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5’s Frontline, he stated that he is saddened that the country is facing a serious crisis and that the military men who were assigned to deal with galamsey are now deeply involved in the practise.
He claimed that our military, which was once respected, is now guarding illegal miners and providing security to those destroying our water bodies.
According to him, the president, as commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, is also interested in galamsey and supports their activities.
He stated that despite having the president on the line, he has nothing to show for it, indicating that he has failed miserably.
