Former President John Agyekum Kufour is aware of the current economic situation and is advising the government, according to his special aide and spokesperson, Dr. Kwabena Osei Adubofour.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm’s Frontline, he said the former president was “extremely concerned” about the current economic crisis.
He [Kufour] is concerned because his government is in power, and that this is affecting the people.
“The former president is concerned because he is concerned that Ghanaians are not getting the full picture of what may have caused this crisis,” he told Kwabena Agyapong.
The former leader, according to the spokesperson, has stated that the outbreak of the covid-19 and the Russian-Ukraine war cannot be ruled out as challenges.
He explained that the government performed well in its first term until the virus outbreak and the recent war.
“Kufour is concerned because the economy had been stabilized and growing prior to the outbreak. He is also dissatisfied that, despite the government’s many achievements, these challenges prevent people from appreciating what has been accomplished.
He also confirmed that the former president interacts with President Akudo-Addo on a regular basis, but these interactions are private.
He added that Ghanaians should trust the NPP because it has what it takes to restore confidence in the economy based on its track record.
He was responding to the statement he issued to disregard social media reports that the former president had forfeited three months of his salary.
According to an earlier report, the former president wrote to the Chief of Staff at the President’s Office requesting that six months of his salary be forfeited to the state.
But his spokesperson described the news as fake and asked Ghanaians to disregard it.
