The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has announced that the business-related human rights policy will go into effect in 2023.
Deputy Commissioner Mercy made the announcement at the National Action Plan meeting in Accra.
Madam Larbi told journalists the policy is something they are working on with stakeholders in the business environment to find effective ways of compliance.
She said the policy would also require businesses ro get compliance certificates from CHRAJ before they are awarded government contracts or have their businesses registered.
The document, commissioned by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), assesses Ghana’s implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
It aims to improve Ghanaian businesses’ ability to meet international human rights standards.
The action plan will also provide guidance to state and non-state actors on the requirement that all business operations adhere to human rights tenets.
In a presentation, National Steering Committee Chairperson Victor Kweku Brobbey explained that CHRAJ’s project assessment mechanisms will ensure that people’s rights are not violated at work.
He stated that CJRAJ would develop a process to help them rate the extent to which a company considers human rights when conducting its operations.
He added that in addition to assessing the company, CHRAJ would be able to rate the companies and grade their performance for the level of compliance on human rights issues.
The implementation of the policy he mentioned would assist Ghanaian workers in seeking legal redress if their employers violated their rights.
The plan aims to strengthen institutional capacity, operations, and coordination efforts of state and non-state actors for the protection and promotion of human rights by businesses; to promote human rights compliance by business actors throughout Ghana; to remediate business-related human rights abuses when they occur; and to raise public awareness of their rights.
