The Majority Leader Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has once again bemoaned the monetization of elections in the country.
He warned that people who accept money and other forms of gifts from politicians before voting for them should understand that nothing comes for free.
He noted that this is one of the ways that corruption thrives, and if we want to deal with corruption, then we have to address this issue.
He reiterated his call for the expansion of the electoral college of the two major political parties as a means to address the vote-buying incidents.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said that if we do not take care, we may get to a point where people who are not competent but have money will be elected to our parliament.
“These individuals who demand money from politicians are Ghanaians. These delegates are members of the NPP, and yet, when there is an internal contest, they demand money from candidates before voting for them.
“No aspirant is going into an election; that is Father Christmas. If they give it to you today, they will find a way to take it tomorrow. When such a person gets the opportunity to be appointed as a minister or gets the opportunity for an appointment, what do you think the person will do? Should they get the opportunity to award contracts, they will definitely be looking forward to kickbacks.”
He said some politicians do not have the means to even rent accommodation, and yet when they get political power, they can construct three houses in four years.
“So can’t you see that there is a problem with what is happening? When I talk about corruption, this is what I am talking about.”
He stressed that when we expand the Electoral College, we will no longer witness these levels of monetization.
