May 8, 2024
0-1

The Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Jean Mean Mensa, has admonished persons who facilitate the process for minors to register during the registration exercise to refrain from unlawful activities.

She said the ongoing limited registration
exercise is reserved for those who have turned 18 and those who are not registered voters.

According to her, the minors who attempt to register do not do so all alone but are assisted by adults.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the commission has established a database of qualified personnel, ensuring their identification through names, photographs, and ID cards., she said.

She therefore advised individuals and political parties to use the process when raising objections, and it would be thoroughly investigated, maintaining integrity in the process.

She further explained that the eligibility criteria for registration include being a being a Ghanaian citizen, age 18 and above, having sound mental capacity, and having residency in the intended voting district.

She added that documentation such as the Ghana passport or the Ghana Card issued by the National Identification Authority was required for registration.

“Those lacking these documents can visit district offices with two registered guarantors, with a warning against guarantors vouching for more than 10 individuals.”

She revealed that the Commission had collaborated with the National Election Security Task Force (NESTF) led by the Inspector General of Police to prevent minors and foreigners from registering, thereby ensuring the integrity and legitimacy of the electoral process.

The EC, on May 7, started the limited votersregistration exercise for new eligible voters.

The exercise is expected to last 21 days and will be conducted across all 268 district offices of the EC nationwide.

According to the EC, 25 universities across the country had been chosen as regional centres due to their high population of residents on campus.

A total of 623, 000 new registrants have been targeted, but the EC boss was quick to add that they could surpass the number.
