The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has admonished the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the days for the limited voter registration exercise.
She made the appeal following the disruptions and challenges that were recorded on day one of the exercise.
This was after she had toured some registration centres in Accra.
“Definitely, if there were places, as I hear, where not even a single person was registered or where very few people were registered because of challenges with the machines, then definitely the EC must make up for that time.
“If it is an extra day, it should be restored. Whatever it is, if it is a couple of hours, it should be extended to the following day just so that everybody registers. I think the job is to ensure that we facilitate the process so as not to frustrate people.”
The limited registration exercise started on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
The limited voter registration exercise is reserved for first-time voters and persons who wish to own a voter card.
The exercise will end on May 27, 2024.
The EC has announced that the exercise aims to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters across the country.
Background
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana says it has successfully addressed the technical issues that affected day one of the Limited Voter Registration.
The exercise which started today, May 7 was hit by faulty machines and network problems forcing first time voters who had gone to the registration centres to wait for hours or leave the centres.
But the electoral body says these challenges that prevented some prospective voters from registering have been resolved.
A statement issued by the EC said it encountered some technical challenges with internet connectivity in several registration centres, which resulted in delayed starts for the registration process.
The EC reported that most technical issues had been resolved by noon, allowing the registration exercise to proceed smoothly across the country.
It further assured the public that it would continue to monitor the process and address any further issues, encouraging all eligible applicants to register to vote.
