Malawi’s vice president and nine people aboard the Malawi Defence Aircraft have been confirmed dead.
The vice president and others were killed in a plane crash, the country’s president announced Tuesday.
The wreckage of the military plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima and the other occupants was discovered in a mountainous area in the country’s north following a day-long search.
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed this in a live address on state television.
He declared that there were no survivors of the crash.
Military officials and police officers with support from neighbouring countries, including Angola and Zambia, had been searching for the plane that also carried a former first lady after it went missing Monday morning while making the 45-minute flight from the southern African nation’s capital, Lilongwe, to the city of Mzuzu, around 370 kilometres (230 miles) to the north.
The search in a big forest plantation in the Viphya Mountains near Mzuzu involved over 600 people, according to authorities.
Seven passengers and three military crew members were on board.
The president described the aircraft as a small, propeller-driven plane operated by the Malawian armed forces since 1988.
