Sekou Nkrumah, the son of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has described President Akufo-Addo as a failed leader.
The present president, as he suggested, has become business as usual, as have past administrations.
He indicated that several individuals saw the human rights lawyer as someone who was no-nonsense and an aggressive leader with a desire to be different.
However, he has turned out to be a disappointment, he said.
Speaking in an interview with Dr. Ren on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM, he said people thought President Akufo-Addo was aggressive and so he would be a different leader, but it has turned out to be business as usual.”.
He stated that the president has nothing to offer Ghanaians and that they should have no hope in his administration.
Recounting the Kumepreko days, the writer and political activist said Akufo-Addo was then seen as a strong person who was prepared to do whatever it took together with those who organised the demsontration at the time to make the country better.
But when he got elected and people thought he was going to be better, he turned out to be a disappointment, he stated.
He made the comments while answering a question on whether it was possible for an independent candidate to be elected as the next president.
In his view, it is possible, but it would be difficult for us to get to that point.
“From my point of view, no independent candidate can win the presidential election. It is not impossible for an independent candidate to win, but it would be difficult.”
He went on to say that it would have to start somewhere, with independent parliamentary candidates putting in a lot of work and winning seats in parliament to help pave the way for an independent presidential candidate to win the election.
“That can be a starting point, then gradually it will be transformed, but if that does not happen, we will be stuck with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).”
He said that being stuck with the NDC and NPP was not a challenge since what is needed is leadership willing to do what is right to improve the country.
Sekou Nkrumah added that it does not matter if we have the NDC or NPP managing the country; what is important is for us to have a leader who is committed to doing what is right at all times to see to the development of the country.
