The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hawa Koomson, has asked fishermen to obey the close season or face sanctions.
She has therefore issued a warning to fishermen against engaging in illegal fishing during the period.
The Minister said this during a ceremony in Dixcove, Western Region, on Monday, July 1, to mark the commencement of the closed season.
“It has come to my notice that some fishermen are planning to land their fish at the Togo border during the closed season; therefore, kindly be warned that they will be apprehended and charged if they go on with their intention.
More so, there shall be no more use of monofilament nets or any unauthorised fishing gear after the opening of the season.”
Since 2015, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has implemented a one-month closed season in accordance with Section 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625).The period, also known as the biological rest period, is the spawning period of fish stocks.
The break from fishing allows the fish to lay eggs towards the replacement of the fish population lost through fishing or through other natural occurrences.
