The 2022 batch of Rotational Nurses and Midwives have given the government a two-week deadline to pay their national service allowances or suffer repercussions.
According to them, for the one-year national service they did, they have not received even one cedi.
The spokeswoman for the batch, Kwame Junior, stated that they have completed their service, but for the one year they served, they have not been paid the GHC 850 monthly allowance.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he lamented that they are facing extreme financial hardship and would want the allowances released to them immediately.
He revealed that some of them have died and others are sick due to the financial difficulties they are facing.
Several of them, he noted, are about to be ejected because they are unable to pay their rent.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that they had planned to demonstrate in April this year, but they were asked to stop since their concerns would be addressed.
However, they have still not been paid, despite
the several petitions they sent to the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Finance.
He has therefore warned that they will pack their belongings and picket at the Ministry of Health if their unpaid allowances are not released in two weeks.
Another issue he mentioned was unemployment, claiming that the 2020, 2021, and 2022 batches of trained general, psychiatric, and other nurses and midwives had not been given permanent jobs after completing their national service.
“It is really difficult for us right now. For the unemployment issue, it has become the norm. We have the 2020, 2021, and 2022 batches at home without employment. We don’t know where we stand now. We don’t know whether we will be employed or not. But the most important thing for us now is for the government to pay us our 12-month allowances. We are so worried that our members are still home without a job.
Some of our members have died, and others are also sick due to financial hardship. We have given them a two-week ultimatum to pay us, or we’ll pack our belongings and go and stay at the Ministry of Health,” he added.
