The Coalition of Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees have served notice of a gangantuan demonstration a week before the December 7 general elections if their arrears are not paid.
The trainees have petitioned the National Peace Council, appealing to it to intervene on their behalf so the government will pay the 67,000 trainees who are owed almost a year of unpaid allowances.
Public Relations Officer for the Coalition, Eric Nana Tachie, disclosed that the level of anger among the trainees could trigger serious threats for the country, especially as we prepare for the elections.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the leadership had to petition the Peace Council because the letters submitted to the police by members to embark on demonstrations were alarming.
He said it was based on this reason that they have asked the Council to intervene so that the government will see the seriousness of the concerns being raised.
“We petitioned the Peace Council to intervene to help prevent any form of tension that would affect the country this election year. Members have submitted several letters to the police requesting to embark on a series of demonstrations that is alarming. As leaders of the group, we want to prevent any form of anger from our members,” he cautioned.
When asked their next line of action if their concerns are not addressed, he said, “Should the Peace Council intervene and the government refuse to release funds to pay all the outstanding arrears owed us, then the police would have to allow the 67,000 members to hit the streets with a demonstration and end at the forecourt of the Jubilee House a week before the general elections,” he added.
He further described the assurances given by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as political rhetoric and must not be taken seriously.
He slammed him for denying that he had no knowledge of the situation.
He claimed that the Vice President had assured them that he would inform the Ministry of Finance to release funds so they were paid.
He added that the Vice President was the one who supervised the implementation of the NABCO initiative and so cannot pretend not to know about their concerns.
