Former President John Dramani Mahama has affirmed that the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy will continue under his administration, with dedicated funding to ensure its sustainability.
He made the pledge during a meeting with Christian leaders in Kumasi on Monday, November 11, 2024.
The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) refuted the assertions that he would cancel Free SHS if elected, calling such allegations a “political gimmick” designed to mislead the public.
In addition to ensuring free SHS funding, Mahama underscored the importance of quality education.
He posited that a well-funded program would improve educational outcomes for Ghanaian students.
He stressed that Ghanaians that under his leadership, Free SHS would not only survive but thrive to meet the needs of future generations.
Mahama declared, “Free SHS has come to stay,” emphasising that although the program has expanded educational access, obtaining long-term funding is crucial to ensuring its continued existence.
“To maintain it and raise its quality, we need to make sure it has adequate funding.”
