A Deputy Communication Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Ako Gunn, has warned that the party will resist any attempts by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the upcoming elections.
Ako Gunn alleged that President Akufo-Addo supports the NPP’s rigging schemes to overturn the people’s will.
The NDC has adopted measures to prevent rigging, as Gunn claims the NPP will lose the 2024 elections and is collaborating with the EC to steal the elections, using intimidation and violence, but the NDC will match them ‘boot for boot’.
He further alleged that the government wants to also use intimidation and violence like what happened in 2020, which led to the deaths of eight people in rigging the elections, but the NDC will match them boot for boot.
‘’ We are prepared to ensure that our victory will not be stolen because there is an attempt by President Akufo-Addo, the NPP, and the EC to rig the elections. We are aware the upcoming election is a clear victory for John Dramani Mahama. If elections were held today, John Mahama would be declared the winner. However, we are aware of the plot by the government and EC to rig the elections. They have plotted to stash the ballot boxes with more ballot papers. They have plotted to fire guns and cause commotion in some of the polling stations, whether it is national security, NPP security, or the regular military. But we want to assure Ghanaians that we will protect the ballot. They have recruited NPP members as EC officials to make the rigging much easier. That is why they have excluded the indelible ink so people will have the opportunity to engage in multiple voting.
But we are also prepared for them. We are well ahead of the NPP in all these. If it is about the use of guns and their firing to disrupt the elections like they did in Techiman—we never thought Ghana could have gone that way—but I can tell you in all authority that we are prepared and that we are covering all polling stations in Ghana. So to all those who would be deployed by the NPP to go and engage in violence or acts that will disrupt the elections, be warned of the consequences.’’
