The Executive Director of Jatikay Centre, Adib Saani, has described as shocking the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) their application to observe the 2024 general elections.
He said it was unfortunate that despite all the documentation presented to the EC, they still didn’t see the need to approve our accreditation.
He has therefore announced plans by the CSOs to write back to the Electoral Commission to demand reasons why his centre, together with other CSOs, were denied accreditation to monitor the December 7th elections.
According to him, the EC’s refusal to grant them accreditation raises numerous questions among citizens.
‘’CSOs play an important role in consolidating the democracy of Ghana. This act by the Electoral Commission will undermine the electoral process. It presents a dangerous situation. The observation by civil society would help the Electoral Commission run a transparent election. They wrote to us without any reasons for refusing our request for accreditation as election observers. We have already trained over 2,000 observers and prepared for this exercise.
The observation forms part of efforts in helping the EC in the space of transparency and credibility. The decision by the EC is very unfortunate, dangerous, and irresponsible, and we will appeal to them to change their position and ensure that all CSOs are granted the opportunity to observe the elections.’’
Adib Saani said the CSOs are credible organisations that are duly registered; hence, it makes no logical sense in refusing to approve them.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said this shows that Madam Jean Mensa has something to hide, and it affirms perceptions that the EC is on a mission to engage in activities that can undermine the integrity of the elections.
