The National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) CEO claims that the previous administration, led by John Mahama, left a GHC 1.2 billion debt.
Dr. Dacosta Aboagye stated that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) nearly failed due to poor management by the NDC administration.
However, the current state of the NHIS is the best in the last 20 years.
He stated that while the NDC was in office, Ghanaians had to queue to get access to their NHIS cards, but under the current NPP and through digitisation, Ghanaians can renew their NHIS in the comfort of their own names.
He told Sir Richie in an interview on ‘As it is in Ghana’ on Rainbow Radio 92.4Fm that ”the NDC left a debt of GHC 1.2 billion at the NHIS, but as I speak with you, I have appealed to the various facilities to submit their claims for them to be paid all outstanding debt owed them.
The NHIS has been transformed. It is at its best in our twenty-year history. The NHIS is being managed far better under the NPP compared to the past. As I speak with you, we have transformed the health sector and made it more accessible for Ghanaians with the introduction of a telemedicine initiative where you can access drugs through the e-pharmacy platform.”
He posited that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s policy for the health sector is unmatched, and if he grabs the opportunity, he will do far better and improve on what President Akufo-Addo has achieved.
