The murder trial of Daniel Asiedu, who is charged with the murder of former Abuakwa North MP JB Danquah, is set for retrial after a hung jury verdict.
In accordance with Section 285(4) of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), the presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, discharge the jury after the seven-member panel returned a split verdict of 4:3 not guilty.
The verdict was deemed insufficient for further action and inconclusive by the court.
Daniel Asiedu is still being held in custody per the judge’s order, regardless of the jury’s verdict.
The case began in 2016 when Asiedu was taken into custody in relation to the late MP’s murder. Asiedu allegedly robbed and fatally stabbed JB Danquah at his home, according to the prosecution.
Asiedu’s plea was accepted in February 2021 following a psychiatric evaluation and a determination that he was competent to stand trial, and the trial started that same year.
It is anticipated that the retrial will address unanswered questions and attempt to bring the well-known murder trial to a definitive conclusion.
