President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated plans to introduce an additional holiday for Eid al-Fitr.
During the campaign period for the 2024 general elections, President John Mahama promised to add an additional holiday to the celebration as part of efforts to honour Muslims.
He revealed that when Parliament settles, his administration will amend the Holidays Act and add the new holiday.
To highlight the significance of the holiday, the proposed amendment would permit Muslims to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr with two days of celebrations.
He disclosed this while speaking at the National Prayers and Thanksgiving service held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on Friday, January 10, 2025.
“We promised to add one more holiday to the Eid ul-Fitr. So as soon as Parliament settles, we’re going to amend the Holidays Act to include an extra holiday on the occasion. And so this year, after we finish the fast of Ramadan, we will have two holidays.”
