The offices of St. Vincent College of Education have been ordered closed by the Dagbon Traditional Council following a disagreement over the appointment of a new principal.
The directive, issued by Alhassan Abdul Fataw, Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, was in response to the college board’s decision to select a candidate for the principal position contrary to the recommendation of Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon.
The previous principal’s retirement necessitated the search for a successor. However, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II’s recommended candidate was overlooked, leading to claims of disrespect toward the King and the Dagbon community.
“It is concerning that, since the college’s establishment, no Dagomba has been appointed as principal,” Fataw stated. “The board did not notify the King of the vacancy and proceeded with their decision despite the King’s call for fair representation.”
The youth of Yendi supported the closure, demanding that the issue be resolved amicably and that the perceived exclusion of Dagbon indigenes from leadership positions be addressed.
The college will remain closed until further notice as discussions continue.
