Sam George, the Minister-designate for Communications, has hinted that he will either reintroduce the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill in Parliament as a private members bill or support the government’s reintroduction of the bill before the House.
This, he explained, stemmed from his commitment to ensuring the protection of Ghanaian values and the safety of children.
The nominee was responding to a question about President John Dramani Mahama’s recent comments, which implied that a government-sponsored bill would be more effective than the current Private Member’s Bill.
During a meeting with the Bishops on January 14, 2025, the President underscored the need to revise school curriculums to incorporate moral and cultural teachings that uphold Ghanaian and African values. This has been misconstrued to mean that the President was shifting the goal post on LGBTQI issues, but the nominee disagreed.
“My position is, that Bill [Anti-Gay] is a critical part of our national lives, Ghanaian family values, our innocent children must be protected. In this 9th Parliament, that Bill will be reintroduced. Either as a private member Bill or government Bill, I will work with the government, if it’s my bill I will bring it back again.”
“The people of Ghana have spoken clearly on this issue, and as their representative, I will ensure that their voice is heard,” he added.
“This is a matter of principle and national interest. The anti-gay bill is not about discrimination but about preserving our moral and cultural values as a country,” he stated.
