The Minority in Parliament has demanded a secret ballot for two nominees of President John Dramani Mahama.
The two nominees are Samuel Nartey George, Minister-designate for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the nominee for Foreign Affairs.
On the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, Caucus Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin stated that they have no objections to supporting through consensus the approval of all other vetted nominees, with the exception of the two nominees.
He reiterated that his side has no interest in obstructing government business, and it was their opinion that this government ought to govern, and so his side has been cooperative in ensuring that the nominees are vetted and approved.
He noted that they can only criticise President John Dramani Mahama’s administration if he is able to have his appointees vetted and sworn in to begin work.
Afenyo-Markin raised these issues when the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, took leave of the Speaker in laying before the House the report that was vetted last week.
The Minority Leader raised concerns over some documentation that the two nominees were to submit to the committee before their approval by the committee.
Chairman of the Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, disagreed, saying the minority had already received the documents in question, and so his claims were not justified.
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga also maintained that under no circumstance would the two be excluded for consideration by the House.
